Rapporteur talk for Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays ( HE 1 . 3 , 1 . 4 , 1 . 5 ) : Messengers of the Extreme Universe
نویسنده
چکیده
In this report I summarize contributions on the highest energy cosmic rays to the 28th International Cosmic Ray Conference in Tsukuba, Japan, Sections HE 1.3, 1.4 and 1.5 involved over 80 oral presentations and about 120 posters. This large body of work attests to the vitality of a field committed to resolving the mystery of the origin of ultra-high energy cosmic rays. These cosmic rays with energies well above 10 eV are messengers of an unknown extremely high-energy universe.

Exploring the Universe beyond the Photon Window
Conventional astronomy spans about 18 decades in photon wavelengths, from 104 cm radio-waves to 10−14 cm γ-rays of GeV energy. Because the universe is opaque to photons of TeV energy and above (see Fig. 1) [1], present studies focus on hadrons, neutrinos, and gravitational waves as messengers probing the high energy universe. The best candidates to serve as messengers in a new astronomy of the ...
متن کاملMessengers of the Extreme Universe
The highest energy messengers arriving on Earth bring information from the most energetic events occuring in the universe since the Big Bang. These extreme environments cannot be reproduced in terrestrial laboratories. Instead, physics at these extremes is studied using telescopes and detectors that span many orders of magnitude in energy (from 10 eV photons to 10 eV cosmic rays). Sources range...

We show that production mechanisms of Ultra-High Energy Cosmic Rays involving quasistable particle-like objects which constitute part of cold dark matter can be tested experimentally by observing Galactic anisotropy in their angular distribution. The observation of Ultra-High Energy Cosmic Rays (UHE CR) [1] at energies close and above the GZK cutoff [2] has revived the discussion of their origi...
متن کاملVery High Energy Phenomena in the Universe : Summary Talk of Moriond
Efforts are underway to qualitatively improve the instruments that can push astronomy beyond GeV photon energy, to wavelengths smaller than 10cm, and map the sky in neutrinos and EeV cosmic rays as well as gamma rays. New gravitational wave detectors will explore wavelengths much larger than those of radio astronomy. The diffuse cosmic photon flux is shown in Fig. 1 as a function of photon ener...
متن کاملCosmic Rays
In this talk I present resent results on high energy cosmic rays, including energy spectra, composition and the study of arrival directions of cosmic ray primaries. Some related results in gamma-ray astronomy and selected recent advances in theory are also covered. c ⃝ Copyright owned by the author(s) under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike Licence.
